Terry takes heart from improved display
03 January 2007
Terry was on hand to head England into the lead during the second half, only to then sit and watch from the bench after being substituted as Diego nodded in a stoppage-time equaliser for the South Americans.
"We wanted both the result and the performance," declared the 26-year-old centre-half, who now has three goals for his country. "We certainly got the right performance, which I think we owed a lot of people. We showed that we are very passionate."
He added: "We have given the fans what we said we would in front of 80,000 people and we owed them that."
Terry, however, accepts the encouraging display against Brazil will count for nothing should England not get their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign back on track with a result in the compact Le Coq Arena next week.
The England captain declared: "Now it is all about results. We can go there on Wednesday, play well and end up drawing or even losing the game, which is unthinkable.
"We need to win. Whatever kind of win it is, we will take it.
"We have not played well or got decent results in the last few qualifying games away from home, so we owe the travelling fans a good result as well."
The Chelsea defender hopes to shrug off his fitness concerns as the team step up their preparations for the Estonia game.
He said: "I felt a bit of a tight hamstring in training during the week. Then I felt it a little again (on Friday night). I did not want to come off, but it is a precaution to make sure I am ready for Wednesday."
