Terry welcomes Spain 'lessons'

Captain John Terry believes England have learnt lessons from their defeat against Euro 2008 winners Spain and are "going in the right direction" to again be a formidable force in world football.

England's bubble was burst with the 2-0 defeat in Seville last month after an unblemished start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. Now they face a testing friendly against Slovakia at Wembley on Saturday before the next qualifier against Ukraine at the same venue on Wednesday.

Terry said: "We had a little bit of a shock in the last game against Spain. It was a bit of an eye opener. We have looked again at that game. Spain are one of the best teams in the world at the moment. They play some great football and on that occasion it was difficult to get close and press them as we would have liked. We would have learnt from that."

He added: "It was good that the Football Association and management chose such a tough game as that. We could have played anyone and won 3-0 but to test yourself against Spain kept our feet on the ground.

"We didn't do some things right. Seeing the way they kept the ball and the work rate and movement they produced for each other is something we can learn from, can put into our game and improve the England side.

"But we are certainly going in the right direction to make England great again and we are playing well at the moment."

Terry also feels Slovakia will prove ideal opponents before England seek a fifth successive win in their qualifying group against Ukraine.

He said: "Slovakia are a big test. They are similar to the Ukraine. They are top of their World Cup qualifying group, they have got some good players in their side.

"We can learn a lot from this game to take into Wednesday. If we are focused and also keep everyone fit for Wednesday, it can be a good learning experience for us."
