The 33-year-old came off after 22 minutes of his side's 32-20 defeat to Australia following a clash with Stirling Mortlock and, although results of a scan are not yet available, the veteran centre is not hopeful.

He told the Daily Star: "I've had a similar injury before, and my gut feeling is I'm out for six weeks. Waiting for confirmation is going to kill me but I think I already know the outcome. I'd never retire but, if I'm honest, they should be planning for the next World Cup so they shouldn't pick me."

Thomas earned his 99th cap against Australia and could be stranded one short of three figures, but he added: "I wouldn't want to cheat the cap by being handed a cameo."
