Thorpe: Appointment may be imminent

Former England batsman Graham Thorpe believes the ECB may be close to appointing a new national team coach.

Thorpe was reacting to news that Ashley Giles has been turned down for an interview for the job, which has been up for grabs since Peter Moores' departure at the start of the year.

Discussing Giles, Thorpe told BBC Radio Five Live: "The fact he has not been able to have an interview will be slightly baffling to him. But maybe the ECB have already got their man. Whether that's Andy Flower (I don't know)."

Giles, the former England spinner who played an instrumental role in the Ashes triumph four years ago, is currently Warwickshire's director of coaching and has also been on the national team selection panel.

However, he is not being considered for the England role, and Thorpe suspects that is because the England and Wales Cricket Board have either chosen their man, or reduced a shortlist to just two candidates.

Zimbabwean Andy Flower has been in the post on an interim basis and took charge of the team for the tour of the West Indies.

"I can only think of a couple - John Wright maybe, the former New Zealand player who managed India for several years," he added.

"I think the rest have fallen by the wayside.

"I can't see beyond (Flower) or John Wright."
