Three blondes recover

The British crew of Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson made a brilliant comeback to finish second in the opening race of the Yngling event at the Olympic sailing regatta in Qingdao on Saturday.

The Team GB trio are hot favourites to win the Olympic gold after claiming back-to-back world championships but made a dreadful start, trailing in 15th and last place at the first mark, 52 seconds behind leaders Greece.

They made up some ground to move up to ninth at the second mark but slipped to 11th at the final mark. However, a strong run to the finish line saw them move up to second, 29 seconds behind the winning Austrian boat and 10 seconds ahead of the third-placed Russians.

Meanwhile, Ben Ainslie made a disappointing start in his quest for a fourth Olympic sailing medal, finishing 10th in the opening race in the Finn event.

The 31-year-old, who is attempting to surpass Rodney Pattison as Britain's most successful Olympic sailor, held a 10-second lead over Croatia's Ivan Kljakovic-Gaspic at the final mark but floundered in the light winds on the final leg to finish 61 seconds behind Greece's Aimilios Papathanasiou at the finish.

Papathanasiou finished 10 seconds ahead of Zach Railey of the United States with Poland's Rafal Szukiel in third place.
