The Great Britain hooker was placed on report by referee Steve Ganson in the 12th minute at the Millennium Stadium after catching Leeds prop Jamie Thackray.

Newton was found guilty after appearing at a disciplinary hearing for a second time this season.

The former Wigan forward has an unenviable disciplinary record and has already served one two-match suspension this year for striking St Helens' Jon Wilkin.

He also sat out the first two months of last season after being handed a 10-match ban for illegal tackles on St Helens pair Sean Long and Lee Gilmour in what turned out to be his last match for Wigan in September 2005.

Newton, who has also been fined £300, will miss this Sunday's Challenge Cup fifth-round tie at Wakefield and Super League games against Huddersfield and Harlequins.
