The world number one began eight shots adrift of leader Sergio Garcia and, despite birdies at the fourth and fifth holes, a bogey-four at the eighth saw him turn in 35. A bogey at 11 set him back further and, although he picked up shots at 13 and 14, another bogey at 15 halted his progress as he finished with a 70 to be two under.

"It's not what I wanted. I shot under and that is about it," said Woods. "I got off to a nice start and was two under (for the round) through five. If I could have gotten one or two more by the turn and then added a few on the back nine, it would have been the ideal round but it didn't turn out that way."

He added: "If I had posted six or seven under par, that would have been right there in the mix. The conditions of the golf course and the weather meant you could make some birdies but if you just missed a couple of shots the pins were extremely difficult.

"If you short-sided yourself, you were not getting up and down. It would have been nice if I had hit the ball a bit better and given myself a better chance. I feel like I putted beautifully all week but I could never get the ball close enough but when I did I made them.

"I was not consistently hitting the ball close enough to make birdies and I was on the periphery of trying to win the championship."
