A female spectator needed treatment after being hit on the head by Woods' sliced approach to the par-five sixth during his third round.
The ball struck the woman on the head and bounced back towards the fairway, the world number one making sure she was not seriously hurt and presenting her with one of his gloves before going on to make par.
The 60-year-old woman from Armagh, Northern Ireland, suffered a cut to her head and was taken to the on-course first aid centre.
It had been an eventful start all round for Woods, who began the day seven shots behind halfway leader Sergio Garcia after struggling to a 74 yesterday.
The 31-year-old made a sedate par on the first, in stark contrast to his double bogey on Friday when he hooked into the Barry Burn, but then three-putted the second for a bogey.
A poor drive on the fourth forced Woods to play well away from the flag with his second, but from around 70 feet he holed for an unlikely birdie to kickstart his challenge. Another birdie came from 18 feet on the next and, not for the first time, a lucky bounce gave Woods the chance of another on the seventh.
Woods turned away in disgust after pushing his approach but it received a friendly bounce over the edge of a bunker and ended 25 feet from the flag, from where he holed for birdie.
At one under par Woods was back within five of the lead, but the best golf of the day was coming from his compatriot Steve Stricker.
Stricker had birdied the first three holes and picked up further shots at the fifth and seventh, surprisingly missing out on a birdie at the par-five sixth - the second easiest hole on the course over the first two days. At four under he was into a share of second place with Korea's KJ Choi, who was out in the last group with Garcia at 2.30pm.
