Matt Taylor's second half goal - his eighth of the season - looked to have earned Bolton a first away win in four months.
But with eight minutes remaining Shittu deflected a low Robert Koren drive past Jussi Jaaskelainen for the equaliser.
Megson was sent from the dugout in injury-time after exchanging words with referee Howard Webb following the substitution of Johan Elmander by Ebi Smolarek.
Albion went close early on when James Morrison shot across the face of the Bolton goal, before Chris Brunt's low shot flashed inches wide of the far post in the 16th minute.
After 21 minutes Kevin Davies got to the byline and cut a low cross back to Taylor, whose rising left-footed drive was parried by goalkeeper Scott Carson.
Marc-Antoine Fortune had a goal disallowed for offside soon after, before Carson denied Taylor and Simon Davies.
Bolton midfielder Gavin McCann had a volley deflected wide, before Albion boss Tony Mowbray made his first substitution after 57 minutes with Roman Bednar replacing Jay Simpson. Megson brought on Shittu a couple of minutes later in place of the injured Sebastien Puygrenier.
Carson got his body behind a 20-yard drive from Ricardo Gardner and then dealt with a low shot on the turn from Taylor - but the latter was not to be denied and after 67 minutes he put Bolton in front. A long clearance by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was headed clear by Olsson and Taylor was first to react, volleying home from just inside the box.
But in the 82nd minute the home side were level when Koren's drive was deflected by Shittu past his own goalkeeper.
