Title success for Britain and Ireland

Underdogs Britain and Ireland beat Continental Europe for the fifth successive time at the Vivendi Trophy in Paris on Sunday - with seven games still on the course.

With Anthony Wall withdrawing from the singles with a shoulder injury and being awarded a half with Alvaro Quiros, Paul McGinley's side led 13-6 and needed only 1 1/2 points for victory.

Rory McIlroy then beat Henrik Stenson on the final green in the top game - it was a clash between the highest-ranked players on both teams - and immediately behind him Graeme McDowell beat Robert Karlsson 3&2.

The two Northern Irishmen had been partners the first three days, losing only once, and their efforts today were needed with the Continent taking leads in six other singles.
