Toffees on brink of Euro qualification

Everton were left on the very brink of UEFA Cup qualification thanks to two dramatic second-half goals in the space of 60 seconds in their 3-0 victory over Portsmouth.

A second-half penalty from Mikel Arteta and Joseph Yobo's header three minutes later broke Pompey's resistance, before substitute Gary Naysmith added a third with an injury-time diving header.

With Bolton and Reading losing, only freak results on the last day of the season could rob Everton of European qualification.

Everton should have been ahead after 16 minutes when Tim Howard's long clearance was headed on by Victor Anichebe for James Vaughan to run clear, but he stabbed his effort wide.

Then Phil Neville's deep cross was headed back by Leon Osman, but Vaughan failed to connect inside the six-yard box. Pompey's only threat came from Linvoy Primus, who headed just over from a Niko Kranjcar corner.

Lee Carsley should have scored for Everton when he blasted wide from six yards after Arteta's cross had been turned into his path by Osman. Then Neville crossed into the six-yard box and Osman missed from a yard out.

Just before the hour, though, Everton grabbed the lead. Vaughan used his strength to force his way into the box on an angled run and he was brought down by Glen Johnson, who was booked. Arteta stepped up to rifle the penalty past David James.

Arteta then sent Vaughan away again and his cross-shot was missed by Anichebe. But from the resulting corner by Fernandes, Yobo rose above Djimi Traore to head home.

Johnson sent a low shot just wide of the post, with Portsmouth desperate to get back into the game. Beattie came on for Vaughan with two minutes left and in injury-time Naysmith took over from Fernandes.

Beattie headed on Arteta's corner and Naysmith dived to head home the third.
