Toon battle back for point

Newcastle hit back from two goals down against Everton to give stand-in manager Joe Kinnear a welcome point from a 2-2 draw.

Everton cruised into a two-goal lead at Goodison Park thanks to Mikel Arteta's penalty and £15million midfielder Marouane Fellaini's first for the club.

But Steven Taylor pulled one back a minute from the break with a far-post header and then made the equaliser for Damien Duff a minute into the second period.

With a gaggle of consortiums - from the USA and the far and Middle East - circling to take over the Tyneside club in the coming weeks, Kinnear may not be around much longer.

But he has certainly made an impact on Newcastle, who at last showed fight and spirit.

Everton threw Victor Anichebe on for Louis Saha late on, but it was Newcastle who almost grabbed the winner when it took a tremendous saving block from Baines to keep out a Charles N'Zogbia shot with Tim Howard beaten.

The hosts then sent on another striker, James Vaughan replacing Steven Pienaar with six minutes left.

Anichebe sent a low shot inches wide while at the other end Shola Ameobi sent a strike just past the far post.
