The 20-year-old pair have had contrasting fortunes this year, with Djokovic moving clear of his Scottish rival - the Serb has risen to number three in the world while Murray is currently ranked 19 after battling back from the wrist injury which forced him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon.
But a defiant Murray said: "I've just missed four and a half months of the year so that was to be expected. You can't keep your ranking up if you're not playing so obviously mine dropped a lot."
He added: "It put me back more than four months and two Grand Slams so it was really difficult for me.
"I was in the top 10 in the world and I was number four in this year's ATP Tour Race when I hurt myself so it was hard."
