Top order give Australia hope

Half-centuries from Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting gave Australia hope by tea on the third day of the third Test against India.

Hayden (83) and Katich (64) put on 123 runs for the opening wicket, their most successful stand in the series, after the hosts had declared on 613 for seven the previous day.

After both players were dismissed, Ponting dug in and guided Australia to 237 for two at tea with an unbeaten 61.

Michael Hussey was on 13 at the other end, their partnership worth 35 so far.
