The club confirmed the 35-year-old had left Meadow Lane by mutual consent just five weeks after signing a five-year contract reputedly worth £40,000 a week. Press Association Sport understands the player must now wait until January to start playing again.

Under FIFA rules, Campbell is highly unlikely to be allowed to join another club having severed his ties with County. As an unattached player, a loan deal would obviously be out of the question.

According to the Premier League, only if the veteran can prove he has a just cause for quitting Meadow Lane - a change of heart or minor disagreement, for example, would not qualify - would he be able to sign for a top-flight team while the window is closed.

For County it is a disappointing development following the club's summer takeover by Munto Finance and the appointment of Sven-Goran Eriksson as director of football, and Trembling questioned whether Campbell had fully thought through the implications of dropping down to the bottom tier of English professional football from the top flight.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "Sol, I think, has still got one eye on the 2010 World Cup squad.

"Maybe he just wants to ply his trade elsewhere. Maybe the decision he made when he signed here was made a little too quickly.

"I think Sol expected this to be Premier League tomorrow almost, which by definition is not going to happen.

"We are on a five-year project, we are in League Two at the moment, we were up at Morecambe on Saturday and I think the stark reality of that compared to where he used to play at - the Emirates and Anfield etc - perhaps brought it home."
