Tresco blow hit England hard - Warne

Australia bowler Shane Warne believes the absence of Marcus Trescothick has been a major factor in England's poor one-day form.

The Somerset batsman has been one of England's most consistent batsmen in both forms of the game since his debut in 2000. However, a stress-related illness cut short his tour of India last year and he returned home before withdrawing from the ICC Trophy in October and ruling himself out of the Ashes and the World Cup.

Warne told Sky Sports News: "He has to sort out his issues first and he has to show them he can fulfil all the commitments - not just the flying - with international cricket and let's hope he can get that sorted out because we just want him to get right."

The 31-year-old's absence has been especially notable in the West Indies where, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and wicketkeeper Paul Nixon apart, England have struggled with the bat - underlined by their humiliating nine-wicket defeat by South Africa which saw them knocked out of the competition.

Only Andrew Strauss, Collingwood and Ravi Bopara made any impression at all and Warne believes Trescothick should be restored to the top of the order if he can make his intended return to the game.

He added: "Trescothick at the top there and maybe (Ian) Bell, (Michael) Vaughan can bat down the order and to me Strauss is a Test player rather than a one-day player, Pietersen (you put) as high as you possibly can."

The futures of captain Vaughan and coach Duncan Fletcher are the subject of debate with calls for the pair to be sacked.

The Australian bowler believes uncertainty and change upsets the players.

"With Michael Vaughan in and out of the side it upset the rhythm of it," he said. "If there are different captains all the time it can upset the rhythm of the side and upset how it operates.

"There's been a lot of stuff about Duncan Fletcher and whether he is going to be there or not and the players just want to know where they stand and what their role is."
