Tresco opens heart over illness

The 31-year-old opening batsman, who's stellar England career appeared to be brought to an end after he withdrew from tours to India and Australia last year with a stress-related illness, admits he was left utterly confused when the problem came to a head on the sub-continent in February 2006.
"When it first kicked off it was like: 'What is going on, I haven't got a clue where I am and what I'm doing'," he said in an interview with Scotland on Sunday. "No-one knew what was going on. People were telling me things and I was like 'no, there is nothing wrong, I just get a bit worried now and then'. I couldn't express it, so I was scared to say anything about it."
Trescothick insists, however, that his problem does not constitute a mental illness.
"It's always branded as a stress-related illness," he explained. "I'm not mentally ill, that's for sure.
"It all came from the build-up of playing and training, practising and being away from home.
"It's a combination of different things and the constant grind of being away from home all the time."
But Trescothick admits his condition can impact his state of mind while out on the pitch.
"You're stuck in the middle, a ground somewhere, (thinking) I'm not sure if I want to do this, I'm not happy about doing this. It's a constant fear."
The batsman has gone some way to rebuilding his career this season with county side Somerset and was part of the provisional squad for the forthcoming ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa before opting not to travel.
