Tamir Cohen fired the Trotters ahead after 13 minutes, only for Younes Kaboul to head Portsmouth level after 22 minutes. But a dubious Matthew Taylor penalty put Bolton back in front six minutes before the break.

Kevin-Prince Boateng struck Pompey's equaliser on his debut, but Cahill scored at the death to leave the home side without a point from five games.

Cohen made no mistake after being sent clean through by Gretar Rafn Steinsson's pass from the right corner of the box, and rifled the ball into the top corner.

Portsmouth levelled when Jamie O'Hara's corner from the right was headed beyond Jussi Jaaskelainen by Kaboul.

Kaboul should have scored again three minutes later but headed wide.

But the home crowd were left fuming when referee Chris Foy gave Bolton a penalty. Trotters captain Kevin Davies raced into the Portsmouth area and momentum carried him into Tal Ben-Haim.

Foy pointed to the spot and Taylor sent David James the wrong way, scoring to the goalkeeper's right.

But the locals were celebrating again after 63 minutes. O'Hara had a shot blocked, but Boateng pounced on the rebound and sidefooted home from 10 yards.

It was to be Bolton though who had the final say and they left Portsmouth bottom of the table when Cahill headed into the bottom right corner.
