Tube milestone for Games

The first underground tunnels on the 500-acre site in Stratford, east London, were completed, paving the way for construction to begin next summer.
Clearing and cleaning the site, ahead of removing 52 electric pylons and putting power lines into the tunnel, is the first of 10 targets which the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) had set to be achieved by the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
ODA chief executive David Higgins described the hit list in the "demolish, dig and design" phase of the Games build as "ambitious targets".
"We have hit every target so far. If we start thinking about contingencies and what if we don't deliver then that is the best way not to hit them," he said.
"We are not planning to fail."
By the time the Olympic flag is handed to London in 2008 most of the Olympic Park site will be cleared up, bridges and roads will have been built, transport improvements should be well under way and venue designs finalised with construction about to begin.
Olympics minister Tessa Jowell said: "We are not complacent and recognise there is still much to do.
"The milestones set out clearly the next step and demonstrate how the fantastic progress we have already achieved will continue.
"But more than that it sets out the scope of our regeneration ambitions, underlining how we are not just building venues for the Games, but sustaining communities with world-class facilities to be used by millions of people."
