Turkey leave it late in Vienna

Turkey progressed through to their first-ever European Championship semi-final after beating Croatia 3-1 on penalties in Vienna.

Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mladen Petric missed the crucial spot-kicks for Croatia after the match had finished level at 1-1 following extra-time.

Croatia had earlier looked to have claimed the victory when Ivan Klasnic headed home Modric's cross in the 119th minute, but Turkey hit back to grab a sensational last-gasp equaliser through Semih Senturk.

The game looked destined not to go to penalties when Modric did superbly to retrieve the ball ahead of Rustu Recber on the edge of the area before floating in a cross that substitute Klasnic headed past the scrambling Turkish goalkeeper, sending the Croatia bench into delirium.

That should have been the matchwinner, but for the third game running Turkey staged a stunning late fightback to equalise two minutes into injury time.

A long ball into the Croatia area fell at the feet of Semih and the Turkey replacement lashed an unstoppable rising shot into the top corner of Stipe Pletikosa's net, sparking manic Turkish celebrations to match those of the Croatians moments earlier.

That sent the game to penalties where misses from Modric, Rakitic and Petric proved costly, as Turkey booked their place in the semi-finals where they will face the tournament's favourites - Germany.
