Turner's decision comes as a result of the club's relegation from Coca-Cola League One on Saturday, only 12 months after they sealed promotion to England's third tier.

The former Shrewsbury, Aston Villa and Wolves manager has been in charge at Edgar Street since 1995 and, despite stepping aside, he will continue to hold the position of chairman and director of football at the club.

Turner told Hereford's official website, www.herefordunited.co.uk: "Whatever mitigating circumstances there may have been which led to the disappointing season, it is the manager who must ultimately take responsibility for results. That I have done.

"I sincerely hope this will not be my last managerial post but at present I am totally committed to providing the new team manager with the necessary resources for success.

"John is a very experienced and respected football man who is capable of having an impact on the players and giving the club the impetus to put us in contention for a quick return to League One."

He added: "I would like to reiterate my apologies to all our supporters for our poor league position.

"I'm sure that, like me, they looked forward to a season in League One following last season's promotion, only to be disappointed."
