Tyson delivers knockout blow

Tyson Gay won the only 100 metres race that really mattered to him this year as he clinched the World title in Osaka.

The American ace easily shot down world record holder Asafa Powell in their eagerly anticipated showdown at the Nagai stadium.

Gay, unbeaten this season, and Powell had deliberately avoided one another until the major athletics meeting of the summer.

That led to the blue riband race being billed as the sprint shoot-out of the year - but from Powell's point of view it became an unwelcome flop.

The Jamaican held his own until the final 10 metres when Gay powered ahead, and his attempted response saw him stutter as he approached the line.

Gay, the fastest 100m sprinter in the world this year, powered across the line to win in 9.85seconds, collecting a welcome US dollars 60,000 prize.

But behind him Powell had lost his momentum and his second cousin, Derrick Atkins, sneaked ahead to clinch the silver medal in a Bahamian record time of 9.91sec.

Powell looked a forlorn figure when finishing in 9.96sec - his dreams of becoming world champion shattered again after he missed the Helsinki championships two years ago through injury.

British number one Marlon Devonish finished sixth in 10.14secs.
