UEFA expected to take tough stance

UEFA are expected to take a tough line against the two outbreaks of violence involving English fans in Europe this week - but the game's European governing body have not yet discussed possible sanctions.

UEFA are investigating the clashes with police from Manchester United and Tottenham's trips to Rome and Seville respectively with the expulsion of Dutch club Feyenoord from the UEFA Cup leading to fears the organisation could take similar action again, although UEFA's communications director William Gaillard would not be drawn on possible punishments.

Gaillard said: "We are at a very early stage in terms of the investigation in terms of the Manchester United and Roma incidents. We are at an even earlier stage of Seville v Tottenham. Any talk of sanctions is pure speculation, it has not been discussed. It makes no sense to talk about sanctions or punishments at this stage."

Gaillard did confirm however that UEFA president Michel Platini has called for a zero-tolerance approach to football-related violence.

He added: "The executive committee fully supports the president's stance of zero tolerance against violence and violent people.

"Mr Platini has written to the presidents of the clubs taking part in the knockout stages of the Champions League, asking for their support and help and he has written to the association presidents, to remind them of their duties."

Spurs fans were involved in ugly clashes with Spanish riot police during Thursday night's defeat by Seville - similar scenes to those seen at the Roma v United match in the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

UEFA have launched investigations into both incidents and it seems likely that Manchester United, Spurs and Roma will all face disciplinary charges, and possibly Seville as well.
