UEFA fine for Rangers
03 January 2007
The Spanish club have been hit hardest, penalised £31,050 by European football's governing body for a lack of organisation and insufficient segregation of supporters.
The last-16 match on March 14 in Pamplona was played with a backdrop of violence in the stands as Rangers supporters clashed with Spanish police.
Many travelling fans pointed the finger of blame at the police, accusing them of crimes ranging from heavy-handed tactics to brutality.
Rangers submitted a substantial dossier of evidence and information to UEFA to support their case that sub-standard security and segregation was a catalyst for trouble.
Rangers admitted shortly after the second-leg match, which Walter Smith's side lost 1-0 to go out of Europe, that several supporters who were banned from Ibrox had made the trip to Spain and gained entry to the El Sadar stadium.
Thousands of visiting fans obtained tickets on the black market for the match.
Footage - which emerged on the YouTube website - of Rangers supporters involved in sectarian chanting at the match, was considered by UEFA as another disturbing aspect of the evening.
