UEFA to probe racist chants

Rangers winger DaMarcus Beasley, who scored the winner, and striker Jean-Claude Darcheville were subjected to taunts by the home fans during the second leg of the second qualifying round tie in Podgorica.

UEFA director of communications William Gaillard said: "We haven't yet received the report from our delegate but we have enough circumstantial evidence to begin our investigation. Our policy is zero tolerance against racism."

He added: "The control and disciplinary body is an independent commission and it is for them to decide, but it is one of our priorities to eradicate this, it is a major concern."

Gaillard did not have an official timeframe for the investigation but added: "It will be quick, in the next couple of weeks probably."

UEFA's official delegate has reported the racist abuse as well as apparent missile-throwing by Zeta fans. The probe follows a similar investigation into claims that England players were subjected to racist abuse by Serbia fans and players during the UEFA Under-21 Championship in June.

And while Gaillard admit racism is a bigger problem in certain areas of Europe, he insists the reaction of some Zeta fans is encouraging.

"It is clear some societies have less of a conscience than other societies," he said.

"But last night we saw one part of the public react against the racism of another part. I think it's the fact that some people are developing a conscience about what's going on and begin to react that is going to eradicate this problem.

"This is when things are eradicated, when it becomes unacceptable to the vast majority of the population."
