United confident of fan safety

After being fined £6,300 by UEFA for the 'improper conduct' of their supporters in the Champions League knockout win over Lille last month, United are likely to find themselves in the dock again after the violence which scarred Wednesday night's quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico.
A club source said: "We were fined after the Lille game because someone set a flare off inside the visiting section. It was a relatively minor incident but a fine is mandatory in situations like that. That is the way of the world but we are not concerned about a long-term problem involving our fans."
Despite United's complaints about "indiscriminate beatings" against their fans, UEFA's investigation into the game is almost certain to see both sides punished in some form.
The clear worry for the Red Devils is that should they progress, they could be back in Italy again in four weeks' time for a possible semi-final meeting with AC Milan, raising the fear of yet more conflict.
United are also confident next Tuesday's second leg, when over 3,000 Roma fans are expected at Old Trafford, will pass off peacefully. However, they are less relaxed about the behaviour of the local police in Rome and will now work with the Home Office in an attempt to ensure their complaints are taken seriously.
"The disturbing scenes witnessed in the Stadio Olimpico last night (Wednesday) shocked everyone at Old Trafford," said a club statement.
"In what the club views as a serious over-reaction, local police handed out indiscriminate beatings to United supporters.
"In those circumstances, neither Manchester United, nor AS Roma is able to call the police to account.
"As a result, the club warmly welcomes the government examination of the incidents and will collect witness statements from fans to submit to the Home Office."
