United stand firm over Heinze

Manchester United remain determined to prevent Gabriel Heinze joining Liverpool despite facing the prospect of legal action from the unhappy defender.

Despite facing fierce resistance from the Old Trafford outfit and knowing it would antagonise the United fans who made him a hero, Heinze has apparently set his heart on a move to Anfield.

But Backing up unequivocal comments made to PA Sport by Sir Alex Ferguson last week, a United spokesman reiterated United's stance that they would not do business with Liverpool, saying: "We have made our position on this matter perfectly clear."

Ferguson was slightly more to the point: "I can assure you, Liverpool will not be getting Gabriel Heinze.

"We can put that to bed right now and we have done so. We have had a couple offers for him and we have turned them down."

In receipt of a letter from United confirming a £6.8million valuation, Heinze knows Liverpool have met the figure but his club are refusing to sell.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez confirmed in Hong Kong on Monday that Liverpool's offer had been rejected and the matter was now in the hands of lawyers.
