United win after stunning fightback

Manchester United produced an astonishing five-goal second-half show to overhaul Tottenham 5-2 at Old Trafford and move three points clear of title rivals Liverpool once more.

Two goals adrift at the interval following close-range strikes by Darren Bent and Luka Modric, United pulled one back through a controversial Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

Wayne Rooney levelled before Ronaldo's diving header put United in front, with Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov wrapping up an amazing win that strengthens the Red Devils' claims on an 18th league title.

Two Spurs goals in three first-half minutes had stunned Old Trafford.

Bent lashed home from six yards from Aaron Lennon`s cross and the winger also set up the second for Modric, who had time and space to bury the ball into the net.

The turning point arguably came in the 57th minute as Howard Webb awarded United a penalty for a foul on Michael Carrick by Heurelho Gomes.

Gomes will argue forever he got a touch to the ball when he went through the midfielder but the man who matters decided it was a foul.

Ronaldo despatched the spot-kick and from there United turned on the style.

Rooney then cut in off the left flank and beat Gomes at his near post and within two minutes United were in front as Ronaldo`s diving header was too powerful for Gomes to keep out.

Another Rooney goal followed, Jonathan Woodgate unable to keep the ball out as he slid across the line trying to block the shot, and a Gomes tangle with Jenas left Berbatov to scramble home number five.
