United win to stretch lead

Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney struck at the start of each half to secure three more precious Premiership points for title-chasing Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The double strike was enough to see off a spirited Sheffield United outfit 2-0, whose relegation fight takes them to Charlton on Saturday and who should have had a penalty when Gabriel Heinze felled Premiership debutant Luton Shelton.

Yet again though, the win came at a price for the hosts as Patrice Evra was forced off in the first half after a crude lunge from behind by Colin Kazim-Richards.
