Vaughan backs England to deliver

Michael Vaughan is backing England to finally find their consistency and raise their game to overcome South Africa on Tuesday and reach the World Cup semi-finals.

Vaughan believes the confrontation with South Africa, who were rated as the world's number one one-day side until last Saturday's shock defeat by Bangladesh, will inspire his side to new levels of performance and seal their last four place.

"I firmly believe we have players who love playing on the big stage and like the big crowds and the big atmospheres and hopefully we can all show up, put in a great performance and put England one step closer to reaching the semi-finals," Vaughan said.

"We're playing the team who were number one in the world and you can raise your bar when you are playing against these teams.

"The guys have had a lot of success against South Africa and we know a lot about them. We know Tuesday's game is a huge challenge for the team to see if we can raise the performance on a big stage."

England's superior run-rate should ensure that victory in Tuesday's Super Eight match at the Kensington Oval will allow them to progress into the last four for the first time since 1992.

It would be a remarkable achievement for a side who have shown few signs of being potential World Cup challengers and only have victories over Canada, Kenya, Ireland and Bangladesh to show for their efforts in the tournament.

Vaughan believes England have a slight advantage over South Africa because they have already played on the bouncy Kensington Oval pitch and the crowd is also expected to be swelled by the arrival of thousands of England fans.

"I sense an excitement around the team and an enjoyment in knowing that the challenge is a massive one," admitted Vaughan.

"If you'd have said at the beginning that we had one game to win in Barbados in front of a huge amount of English support and a wicket we've played on already to get through to the semi-final, I think I'd have taken that."
