Vaughan defends aggressive policy

Michael Vaughan has defended England's aggressive policy during the drawn opening Test and vowed to continue with the same tactics against India during the next five days at Trent Bridge.

The England captain was one of many players drawn into a war of words out in the middle as the opening npower Test drew to a thrilling climax at Lord's, with India clinging on at 282 for nine when the weather halted play during the final afternoon.

"We're trying to play our cricket with a real intensity about it and that involves being a little bit aggressive," said Vaughan. "It's not untoward in the game of cricket, we're just trying to hit the pitch hard and hit the right areas and try and really rally around in the field - it's nothing that we haven't done in the past, it's just something we're doing well at the minute."

England were so vocal on the fourth evening that Dinesh Karthik pulled away from the wicket and complained about the sledging, only for Sourav Ganguly to walk down the pitch and tell him to get on with it.

That led to an exchange between Ganguly and Vaughan as the two sides left the field, but the England captain insisted: "It wasn't a great deal, just a bit of talking after play seeing how he was going to play in the morning, that was all.

"I didn't hear Karthik say anything. It was just a bit of playful banter. You're always trying to put the batsman off, but it was nothing really.

"Most wicketkeepers are a pretty similar character. Matt's (Prior) doing well at the minute and I guess it's part of his armoury to try and get one up on the batsman - I don't think many batsmen listen but it's certainly part of his armoury."
