Vaughan hails 'ruthless' England
29 January 2007
England won for the 20th time under Vaughan in Tests - equalling Peter May's record - as the West Indians succumbed by an innings and 283 runs at Headingley.
"We were ruthless and got the job done," said Vaughan. "When you win by an innings and plenty, it's quite a big defeat for the opposition, but we're only 1-0 up with two to play. We've got to do exactly the same in a week's time at Old Trafford."
England took their number of centuries in two matches against West Indies to seven, with man of the match Kevin Pietersen hitting his maiden double Test hundred and Vaughan reaching three figures for the 16th time in his 65th appearance.
Having scored in excess of 550 at Lord's, however, England's big improvement was in the field, led by Vaughan's former Yorkshire colleague Ryan Sidebottom, who picked up eight wickets in the match.
"Ryan was exceptional from his first ball, offered great angles with his left-arm variety," Vaughan said. "Certainly he didn't swing it like that when he was at Yorkshire a few years ago.
"He got conditions that will suit his style of bowling, but you've still got to produce the goods.
"He did it to a very, very high standard, put all their batsmen under pressure, whether left-hand or right and bowled the odd sharp bouncer.
"He'll be a real threat to all batsmen if he can reproduce that kind of performance on a regular basis."
