England captain Vaughan was last out for 106, his sixth Test hundred equalling Graham Gooch's record, in a score of 319.
But the first npower Test was heading for a draw as the tourists closed the fourth evening on 40 without loss, a deficit of just two runs.
Vaughan, 33, now has 18 Test hundreds after scrapping his way to three figures on the back of a poor start to the summer. Opposing captain Daniel Vettori registered his 250th Test scalp when he had Vaughan held in the deep - it also completed a five-wicket haul.
Despite the good batting conditions on the fourth day, England lost regular wickets, the biggest cluster being six for 87 runs either side of lunch.
Openers Alastair Cook (61) and Andrew Strauss (63) brought up their first-ever hundred opening stand early on the fourth morning.
But Chris Martin was celebrating a success in the eighth over when he found the edge of Cook's bat and by the mid-afternoon drinks break, left-arm spinner Vettori had England reeling at 208 for six by dismissing Paul Collingwood and then wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose first ball.
But left-handers Broad (25) and Ryan Sidebottom (16) hung around long enough for Vaughan to more than double his score and as the skipper went in search of quick runs he was caught at deep midwicket to give his opposite number Vettori figures of five for 69.
Opening batsmen Jamie How and Aaron Redmond then successfully negotiated 15 overs to see the tourists through to the close with all 10 second innings wickets in tact.
