Vaughan: Hoggard doubtful

England captain Michael Vaughan revealed key bowler Matthew Hoggard "has got to be a doubt" for the second Test in Sri Lanka after watching his team lose the first match.

After suffering a back injury while bowling on Tuesday Hoggard - who claimed six wickets in the match - was able to bat, but Vaughan revealed major concerns over his participation in Colombo.

"Hoggard's got a stiff back and has got to be a doubt for next Test," Vaughan told Sky Sports 1.

Asked if that could mean a return for Steve Harmison, he added: "Could do - everyone's available for selection."

The tourists had looked in trouble after early wickets fell on Wednesday morning before a century stand between Ian Bell and Matt Prior gave them hope.

But after Muttiah Muralitharan removed both in quick succession in the evening session in Kandy, the hosts wasted little time in sealing victory.

Vaughan claimed he was proud of his team's battling display in defeat.

"We fought really hard," he said. "Belly and Matty Prior's partnership was exceptional in the middle period.

"There's a lot of real positives and Sri Lanka clawed it back with some exceptional bowling and batting.

"Their target was always going to be difficult to bat at - at the end we thought we'd get over the line. Hopefully we'll get to Colombo and play a bit better and make it 1-1."
