Vaughan in good touch

Captain Michael Vaughan made 38 in his first innings of the winter as England replied to a mammoth 500 for five declared at Colombo Cricket Club.

Vaughan showed moments of class, hitting seven boundaries, before being adjudged lbw to Malinga Bandara.

England were 130 for one at lunch against the President's XI, the top-order batsmen making the most of a docile surface to spend extended time in the middle.

Having reverted back to opener for the Sri Lanka Test tour, Vaughan struck three handsome fours when the ball was at its newest as the hosts' attack took their turn to toil in the heat.

The 33-year-old took his toll on Dammika Prasad, tucking off his pads to the midwicket rope and cutting powerfully in the fourth over of the morning before hitting a third boundary with a textbook on-drive in the sixth.

Twice in succession after the first drinks interval, Nuwan Kulasekera dropped short outside the off-stump - and Vaughan latched on to dispatch both.

Bandara was punished for dropping short when Vaughan pulled through wide mid-on, but another delivery skidded on to defeat an attempted whip to the leg-side and win the lbw decision.

Vaughan's new first-wicket partner Alastair Cook accumulated steadily to reach a half-century in 80 balls.
