Vaughan: KP can be a great

Michael Vaughan is backing Kevin Pietersen to finish his career as one of the greats of the game providing he retains the drive and determination which have established him as England's best batsman.

Hampshire star Pietersen links up with the rest of England's one-day squad at Old Trafford on Wednesday to prepare for Thursday's fourth match in the NatWest Series against India having already made his mark as one of the best in the world.

"I see a real drive in him...if he wants to be a true great he can be and at the minute I'm seeing that he wants to take his batting records to new heights, he wants to end up with a career average of 50-odd and probably in both forms of the game," said Vaughan in a podcast on NatWest's cricket website.

"He wants to end up with 30-odd hundreds and he's well on his way to achieving that. The big question will come in a year, two years, when he's been playing international cricket for four or five years and it can sometimes feel like hard work.

"That's going to be the real hard ask for him. I'm sure he will do it because he's very driven, he's great for the side, he's great to watch, we all love sitting on the balcony watching him win his game because he scores so fast - I expect a lot more runs from Kevin."

Vaughan stressed: "He makes it very difficult for the opposing captain because he hits the ball in so many strange areas and he's got that much ability with his hands that he can flick it either side of the wicket at will.

"I guess how good he becomes will be down to Kevin. How much he really wants to push himself, how much drive he wants, how many high goals if you like, he wants to set himself.

"I really do think he's got everything going his way if he really wants to become a true great at the game - I haven't played on the England side with a better player than Kevin Pietersen."

While Pietersen remains one of the most popular England players, he may have to hand the spotlight over to key all-rounder Andrew Flintoff at his Old Trafford home if he returns from the knee problem which sidelined him for Monday's victory over India in Birmingham.

Flintoff was forced to watch because of a knee problem but England are confident he will be fit enough to return and boost hopes of securing a series triumph during the remaining five matches in the series.
