Vaughan Test hopes fade

Michael Vaughan's broken finger looks set to end his hopes of leading England into next week's first Test against West Indies at Lord's.

The 32-year-old captain appeared to be winning his fitness battle, but on the eve of the squad being revealed by chairman of selectors David Graveney, Yorkshire team-mate Deon Kruis has revealed how Vaughan struggled through a net session on Friday.

"He has been in the last couple of days trying to test the finger," South African seamer Kruis told Sky Sports. "He's had an X-ray and had some strapping on the finger but he won't be ready for the first Test. He feels pretty confident of being ready for the second Test match."

England also have a slight doubt over key batsman Kevin Pietersen, who suffered a calf strain last week and is sitting out the current championship match against Lancashire at the Rose Bowl as a precaution.

With doubts over Pietersen and Vaughan, England had always planned an expanded squad - particularly as there are only three days separating the end of the first Test and the start of the second Test at Headingley on May 25.

In-form Middlesex batsman Owais Shah is almost certain to be called up as cover for both players in the squad.

Shah averages 89.75 in championship cricket this season, having started the summer with a brilliant 193 against Somerset at Taunton, and he told the BBC: "I feel I'm striking the ball reasonably well and feel in a good state of mind.

"It would be wonderful to play for England. If the call comes up, great, if not I have to keep working hard and keep knocking hard on the door."
