Venables against 'knee-jerk reaction'

McClaren's tenure as manager would almost certainly come to an end if they do not reach the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, and last month's defeat to Russia means their qualification destiny is now out of their hands.
But Venables told The Sun: "If the FA is convinced they have someone better who will instantly transform us into World Cup winners then fine. But they must make sure they come to a decision for the right reasons not just because it seems right at one particular moment."
He added: "We are not thinking about our futures. Whatever happens to me and Steve McClaren will happen. That is out of our hands but knee-jerk reactions will be a mistake in my view."
England's best hope of qualification is for Russia to drop points away to Israel next Saturday and for the Three Lions to then beat Croatia at Wembley on November 21.
Venables added: "Steve is quite bullish at the moment. When you have a chance of qualifying you have to be. We are concentrating on one thing only and that is beating Croatia."
