Victory hopes fade for England

All hopes of victory were virtually gone as Andrew Strauss' team headed into lunch with West Indies 433 for four, just 113 runs in arrears, and time running out in the contest.

English frustration spilled over when fast bowler Stuart Broad was spoken to by umpire Daryl Harper after appearing to show dissent in the eighth over of the day.

Broad was called for a wide by Harper upon sending a bouncer down to Brendan Nash from around the wicket, and expressed his displeasure at the decision.

Harper discussed the issue with Broad at the end of the over and then summoned captain Strauss to speak to his player and calm the situation.

A new England record of extras in an innings was completed earlier in the over when Broad angled one into Nash and the ball deflected off the pads for four byes to take the total to 65.

Australia-raised Nash and fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul shared a double century stand which was brought up by the latter's edged four off James Anderson, the pick of England's bowlers.

Nash was given a working over by Anderson on 99, surviving a maiden before bringing up his first Test hundred with a tuck for two to the leg-side off left-arm spinner Monty Panesar.

Despite playing and missing against the reverse-swinging ball, however, Nash reached the interval unbeaten on 109 with Chanderpaul 86 not out.

England entered this match requiring victory to share a campaign they were heavy favourites to win before arrival in the Caribbean.
