Viewed holds Bauer charge
04 January 2008
The Newmarket handler claimed the runner-up spot with Purple Moon last year and he had to settle for the same place as Bauer could not catch the Bart Cummings-trained winner.
Blake Shinn's mount just prevailed in a photo finish with C'est La Guerre in third while Aidan O'Brien's Septimus was down the field.
Shinn told At The Races: "It hasn't sunk in yet. What a thrill. It was important to get him in a good rhythm and the speed was genuine throughout.
"I was very confident as I had a lot of horse so I was able to move when I would have liked to.
"I got there way too early but he was travelling that strongly. When I pushed the button he had a very good turn of foot, particularly on this good ground. You cannot underestimate Bart Cummings."
"There is a bakers dozen coming up next year, always look ahead boys," said Cummings.
"It's nice to win a race like this. It's a race that everyone in Australia likes to win. I thought it was all over in the last 50 yards and then I thought I wasn't sure. I couldn't tell."
Winning owner Dato Tan Chin Nam was enjoying his fourth success in the race following the victories of Think Big, a back-to-back winner in 1974 and 1975, and Saintly in 1996.
He said: "I'm very happy that the horse won. He put up a gutsy run and I thought he had lost for moment. It was my fourth win and now I'm happy not to win any more but if it happens again, I will not complain!"
