Scott Carson saved a first-half penalty from Rovers midfielder Matt Derbyshire before Roque Santa Cruz put the visitors ahead after 67 minutes with his 11th league goal of the campaign.
But Ashley Young, Villa's most dangerous player, levelled six minutes later with a stunning 20-yard free-kick.
Villa central defender Martin Laursen produced a superbly-timed tackle to halt David Dunn after he had burst into the box.
Carson then came racing out of his area to fly-hack clear from Derbyshire and kept Villa on level terms by saving a penalty from Derbyshire after 24 minutes.
Nigel Reo-Coker conceded the spot-kick when he barged into David Bentley, but Derbyshire saw his shot saved by Carson away to his right.
Carson tipped over an inswinging Morten Gamst Pedersen corner over the bar early in the second half.
Substitute Marlon Harewood was responsible for Villa's first decent effort on target after 63 minutes, with Brad Friedel getting his body behind a low drive. But four minutes later Santa Cruz silenced the home fans by breaking the deadlock. Dunn had a left-footed shot parried by Carson and Santa Cruz was the first to react, forcing the ball home from close range.
Within six minutes, though, Villa were level through Young's fourth goal of the campaign. Gabriel Agbonlahor was brought down by Steven Reid just outside the Blackburn box and Young curled the free-kick past the diving Friedel.
Harewood came close to winning the game for Villa when his header hit the crossbar from a Young free-kick.
