Harlequins' Australian forward Richard Villasanti has been forced to retire at the age of just 27 after failing to recover from knee surgery.

Villasanti, who made one Test appearance for Australia in 2003, was signed by the Londoners in February as a replacement for Solomon Haumono but never played for the club.

"The club would like to commend Villa on the outstanding way he has conducted himself during this difficult time," read a statement. "We wish him all the best in the future."
