The 30-year-old had already decided to leave Bradford when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign after the Bulls were only willing to offer the ex-Leeds and Wigan forward a one-year extension.
Newton said: "I'm very much looking forward to joining the Wildcats. I had the opportunity to go to a number of other clubs but I wanted to come to Wakefield as I have been very impressed with how they have performed this season and the current set-up."
Newton has made 89 appearances for the Bulls since his move from Wigan in 2006.
Bradford have already moved to sign his replacement by confirming the capture of Manly's Heath L'Estrange for 2010.
Wildcats coach John Kear said: "This is another pointer to the fact that Wakefield Trinity Wildcats is a developing and improving club.
"I am very happy that a player of the calibre of Terry Newton has decided to join us.
"I feel that Terry's experience and ability will allow the team to once again improve in 2010 and beyond."
