Wales in World Cup Sevens final
07 January 2009
Paul John's unfancied side, who only qualified for the last eight on points difference, beat sevens heavyweights New Zealand 15-14 in the quarter-finals before overcoming Samoa 19-12.
Argentina beat Fiji's conquerors Kenya 12-0 in the other semi-final.
The tournament was turned on its head at the quarter-final stage after Wales completed their second victory over injury-hit New Zealand inside a month.
England then crashed out to Samoa in sudden-death extra-time, while Kenya picked off Fiji, the reigning world champions, and Argentina beat South Africa.
Wales' semi-final victory over Samoa, who had been taken to the brink by England, was fired by a brilliant opening try from Aled Brew.
The Newport winger's powerful run then created the opening for Tal Selley as Wales took a 12-5 lead into the interval.
Cardiff's Tom Isaacs, who had scored the winning try 40 seconds from time against New Zealand, extended Wales' lead to 19-5 but they had to withstand a determined Samoan fightback.
And they had Lee Williams to thank for a brave intervention which earned him a bloody mouth but denied Samoa a try with the final play of the game.
