Wales off to solid start

Wales produced a strong second-half performance to begin their campaign at the Emirates Dubai Sevens with a 22-7 victory over the United States.

Gareth Chapman opened the scoring for Wales, cutting inside two men before accelerating for the line, but America hit back and the scores were tied 7-7 at half-time.

It was a physical contest which did not play to Wales' strengths but Chapman's pace and movement caused America constant problems and Lee Williams secured the win with two well-taken tries.

Nick Wakeley sealed the victory with Wales' fourth try from the final play of a tough opening game.

Wales coach Dai Rees said: "It was good to be put under pressure at 7-7. We kept calm and it will stand us in good stead."

Wales are due to tackle Kenya and then Samoa later in the day.
