Walker injury woe mars Leeds win

A sickening injury to Hull KR's former Great Britain centre Chev Walker overshadowed Leeds' 44-8 victory in the Super League qualifying play-off tie at Headingley.

The ex-Leeds favourite underwent surgery on a compound fracture of his left leg, the result of a collision with Rhinos centre Keith Senior just 11 minutes into the match.

"Our thoughts are with him," said Leeds coach Brian McClennan. "Our best wishes go out to him. It good to hear the fans show their respect and sing for him."

Already without Shaun Briscoe, Ben Galea, Ben Cockayne and Jake Webster through injury, Rovers lost loose forward Scott Murrell earlier in the day when he was forced to undergo emergency dental surgery and the injury to Walker added to the disruption.

"He's had surgery straight away and we can only be hopeful that they can get it fixed and get the leg back to normal," said Hull KR coach Justin Morgan.

"Obviously the bone popped through the skin so it looked fairly nasty. It was obviously disruptive and we also lost Scott Murrell with a tooth infection which threw our plans into disarray. Hopefully we've got all our bad luck out of the way."

Defending champions Leeds put their injury-hit opponents to the sword to move to within 80 minutes of a third successive Grand Final at Old Trafford.

Lee Smith and Ali Lauitiiti scored two tries apiece as the Rhinos scored 34 unanswered second-half points to earn a week off and a home semi-final in a fortnight's time.

"We got the win so that gives us a chance to have an extra week's preparation for the next game," said McClennan. "I thought it was a poor standard game. I've been so excited about the final series and thought it was scrappy.

"We were poor, I don't think Hull KR were that great and I don't think the officials were great either. It's not a great start for the final series and I hope it can get better than that. I hope we can lift our standard."
