Wasps: 'No issue' after Cipriani spat

Wasps confirmed there was an incident between Danny Cipriani and Josh Lewsey - but insisted it was nothing more than a regular training ground spat.

Reports on Wednesday morning stated the pair came to blows after Lewsey criticised Cipriani for missing tackles during a contact training drill, but the club insisted those reports have been overblown.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Rugby is a fiery and physical game and incidents like this happen in training sessions all the time. There is no issue and there is no problem between Danny and Josh. They are friends and team-mates."

Flare-ups are not uncommon on a training field and Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan would be more concerned if his players were not showing the passion and commitment required to get their season back on track.

Wasps, the defending Guinness Premiership champions, have lost five of their first six games and head into Heineken Cup action this weekend with a home tie against French club Castres.

Cipriani is set to make his second appearance for Wasps at the weekend after returning from a gruesome fracture dislocation to his ankle.

Earlier this week he explained how a few choice words from coach Shaun Edwards had hit home and that Wasps would step up their intensity for the visit of Castres.

"We will be more aggressive, we will run harder and we will have that edge that we lacked. It is about time we stand up and make our fans proud," he told PA Sport.

"Shaun Edwards has hit home with a few truths and really made a few points clear to some of the guys. We needed it and it needed to be said."
