The 35-year-old was named as the club's manager on Monday after a spell in charge of Chelsea's reserves.

"He has some great ideas and philosophies. He is about the community, the academy and playing the right type of football and is the right man for us," Simpson told Sky Sports News.

Giving a relative unknown the job is a risk for the Hornets - though one which paid off when Adrian Boothroyd was handed the job at an even younger age in 2005 - but Simpson is confident Rodgers is the man to take the club forward.

He added: "We interviewed a number of very good candidates and he came out on top.

"He had 10 years at Reading which gave him a good pedigree and then he moved on to Chelsea. You don't survive at Chelsea unless you're very good indeed.

"We will stay in the Championship, I believe that sincerely."
