Watson: Aussies must step it up

Shane Watson admits Australia's failure to consistently produce their best is costing them in the current Ashes series.

Australia trail England 1-0 with two Tests remaining heading into the fourth match at Headingley, which starts on Friday.

"We can raise the intensity to where we need it to be and we have been able to do that for periods of time," said Watson. "But we haven't consistently been able to keep that going for the whole five days, and that is something we know we have to achieve to win this series."

He added: "It is something we are challenging ourselves to do, keep that intensity for the whole five days.

"For me personally, and as a group, we're really looking forward to the challenge."

All-rounder Watson was recalled to the side at Edgbaston last week as a replacement opener for the out-of-form Phillip Hughes.

He impressed with a half-century in each innings and is hoping to pick up where he left off.

"I loved opening and really enjoyed the challenge of facing the England bowlers with a brand new ball," said Watson.

"I'd love to keep opening, but keep working on my bowling.

"My bowling is a bit of a work in progress at the moment from where I've been with my back injury and lay-off, but I'm loving the challenge I've got at the moment."
