Watson guards against all-out attack

Scotland assistant manager Andy Watson hopes the players will not be overwhelmed by raw emotion during Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Italy at Hampden Park.

Alex McLeish's side need a win against the World Cup winners to ensure they reach their first major finals since the 1998 World Cup.

"That is the thing we have to be careful of - we can't be all emotion and gung-ho," said Watson. "We have to have an awareness of the back door and not give them opportunities."

He added: "We are not the favourites going into this game. We are playing the world champions, albeit we're at home, but they are still the favourites.

"Italians know that they are strong defensively. They know how to defend, they are renowned for it.

"So perhaps they will say that if we - Scotland - go crazy and go all-out attack at them, they can hit us on the counter-attack.

"It would be great to have a crystal ball and know how the game will develop and pan out.

"We hope we will be able to put pressure on the Italians.

"We've got to win but if we score the first goal, then that changes the whole balance of it for the Italians - it will mean they will have to go and do something.

"So the game will change throughout."
